Who am I?
Aug 25, 2022. By Sierra Zhang.
The thing that makes me “me” is my DNA. No, I’m not talking about genetics and chromosomes, but rather the “humanity DNA” that defines all of us. For example, if I summarize myself in one sentence, I would go with “I’m Sierra, someone who is passionate about emerging and new stuff, awesome ideas, daydreams, talking, and witty stuff.” This one sentence includes tons of info: how I want people to call me, my version of what I value most (my passions), and how I want others to see me (obviously, different people will choose to introduce different aspects in this one sentence). I’m happy when I’m talking or doing things I really care about and really feel the meaning of doing it. It could either be a new idea, my project, a birthday gift for my friends, an interesting class assignment, or even a cup of smoothie that tastes great. That’s why when I first entered college, I experienced one of the biggest struggles in my life — moving from a high school with only ~70 people every graduating class to a much, much larger college. I felt anxious as it was hard to find my place (unlike a small school, it’s difficult to make my ideas heard in a larger place). Also, those friends who understand me and talk deeply with me are all spread around the world, and we will only meet once or twice a year. So as someone who loves to make my opinions heard, it has been hard for me to keep everything inside. But luckily, I was able to travel and see new things in the summer and change my mindset a bit, and offer myself the vibe for an all-new semester. However, a marketer doesn’t care about this at all. To them, I’m Asian, about to be 20, male, in college, and single (maybe that’s why I always get Asian food ads on Youtube). They may notice that I don’t like waking up or sleeping early, like Apple, Tesla, etc. And since I visit social media so often, all platforms keep track of all these and push related content to me. Recently I searched for furniture often, so they also pushed a lot of those to me. I feel that the marketers’ eyes focus on the more superficial part of me while I myself know more stuff deep inside.
